Lantern Hill Mysteries gives kids a layered, evidence-based mystery to solve without giving the host another full-time job. A clear Host Guide, at-a-glance game flow, optional character roles, and step-by-step setup make it easy to run, whether you keep things simple or go full Lantern Hill.
The bell is missing. Lantern Night starts at 8:00. And someone on Lantern Hill knows exactly what happened.
In The Mystery of the Lantern Hill Bell, kids ages 8–12 become the detectives in an immersive mystery they actually have to solve. They’ll search for hidden evidence, question suspicious characters, follow an old map, compare stories, piece together a timeline, examine physical clues, and decide for themselves who took the bell and why.
This isn’t a scavenger hunt with a detective costume thrown over it. There’s no numbered trail telling kids exactly where to go next. Evidence leads to suspects. Suspects lead to new questions. Everyone has something to explain, and the most suspicious person isn’t always guilty of the crime you think they are.
The mystery is designed to work at home, at a party, with a small group of friends, or anywhere you can turn a few ordinary spots into Lantern Hill.
Everything the host needs is included
The complete 30-page printable game gives you the materials and guidance to run the mystery from beginning to end, including:
- Complete Host Guide & Setup Instructions, with the solution, game flow, evidence placement, timing, hints, and guidance for keeping detectives moving without giving away the answer
- Flexible Character System requiring only one adult host. The host can play every character, or individual roles can be handed to willing adults, older siblings, or guests
- Character Encounter Guides for Mr. Bellows, Benji Park, Willa Reed, Mrs. Vale, and Theo Mercer, including exactly what each character knows, what they should reveal, and how to respond when detectives ask questions
- Detective Case Materials, including suspect files and open-ended Final Deduction pages where kids can organize evidence and build their own theory
- Lantern Hill Map used by detectives to locate an important site from the neighborhood’s past
- Printable Evidence & Clues, including anonymous notes, an old photograph, Theo’s torn notebook page, Benji’s marked tool, and other physical evidence
- Lost & Found Sign to transform an ordinary box, basket, or drawer into part of the game world
- Old Station Marker to create an investigation location anywhere you choose
- Printable Lantern Hill Bell, so you don’t need to own a real bell to play
- Lantern Night props and setup materials that turn ordinary household items into evidence hiding in plain sight
The game also incorporates simple real-world props, such as a short piece of cord, to make the investigation feel tactile without requiring a shopping trip or elaborate party setup.
A mystery with an actual mystery
There are several ways to crack the case. Younger detectives might notice matching objects and physical evidence. Older kids may start comparing handwriting, questioning motives, or reconstructing exactly what happened between 6:50 and 7:15.
They can disagree. They can change their minds. They can even accuse the wrong person. The game is designed to keep going and respond to their theory rather than requiring kids to magically arrive at one predetermined answer at exactly the right moment.
And finding the missing bell isn't quite the same thing as solving the mystery.
Because on Lantern Hill, the most important question isn't always who did it?
Sometimes it's why?
